US President Donald Trump has estimated that Russia has taken over 78 percent of Ukraine's land. He has called on both sides to stop the war and leave it as it is.

Al Jazeera reported on Monday (October 20) that the US president told reporters on Sunday, "Both sides should stop the war and go to a solution with territory in future talks."

Donald Trump said, "What I'm saying is that they should stop the fighting now, go home, stop killing people and end it. Otherwise, it will be difficult to discuss the details of the final solution."

When asked what would happen to the Donbass, which has witnessed most of the war, Trump said, "Let it be cut off as it is. I think Russia has already taken over 78 percent of the land. Leave it as it is now. They can discuss it later."

Ukraine has previously insisted on the return of all its land. Trump himself said last month that Ukraine could win militarily and reclaim all territory occupied by Russia, including the Crimean peninsula and other parts of eastern Ukraine.

The US president, who has pledged to quickly end the war between Russia and Ukraine, is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Hungary in the coming weeks.

Trump told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House last week that “there is a chance to quickly end the conflict if there is flexibility.”

Meanwhile, Zelensky has renewed his request for the United States to provide Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles. Trump has not said yes to the request. Zelensky said that he and Trump have discussed the long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles, but that the United States does not want to escalate tensions.
