During the long-term government shutdown, US President Donald Trump has threatened to cut some of the Democrats' favorite programs. However, he also said that the military budget will remain intact.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (October 14) local time, Trump said that Democrats are getting into trouble due to the shutdown. He also said that a list of some programs that will be permanently closed may be released by Friday, but did not give any specific information. He said that Republican programs will be safe.

Meanwhile, Trump has already redirected or suspended $ 28 billion allocated for infrastructure and energy initiatives in Democratic-dominated states such as California, Illinois and New York.

According to the White House, about 4,200 employees in eight government departments were given reduction-in-force notices last Friday. The main layoffs were in the Treasury Department, Health and Human Services and the CDC.

Among them is the Treasury Department's Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, which helps low-income communities — a move that has concerned both parties.

While more than 10,000 federal employees are furloughed during the shutdown, the White House has confirmed that $8 billion will be redeployed to keep military and Coast Guard personnel on payroll. Military personnel have typically worked without pay during shutdowns in the past and have been paid back later.
The Senate has yet to agree on a budget bill, which is needed to end the shutdown. As of November 21, the Republican proposal to expand government funding had not passed, with the vote split 49–45 along party lines.

There are currently about 750,000 federal employees who are not receiving pay, but essential workers are continuing their duties in the hope of future compensation.
