The Aston Villa shot-stopper made his 13th World Cup appearance in Argentina's quarter-final victory over Switzerland, equalling the record held by legendary goalkeeper Ubaldo Fillol, who was part of Argentina's 1978 World Cup-winning team. A start against England would take Martinez to 14 World Cup appearances, giving him sole possession of the record.

On his way to the milestone, Martinez has already surpassed former goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who made 12 World Cup appearances across the 2010 and 2014 tournaments. Fillol, meanwhile, featured in 13 World Cup matches over three editions—1974, 1978 and 1982.

Next on Argentina's all-time list is 1986 World Cup winner Nery Pumpido with nine appearances. Sergio Goycochea and Antonio Roma each played six World Cup matches, while Roberto Abbondanzieri and Daniel Carnevali made five appearances apiece. Overall, 19 goalkeepers have represented Argentina in at least one World Cup match.

The latest milestone will further cement Martinez's place among Argentina's greatest goalkeepers. The 2022 World Cup winner has once again established himself as one of the team's most dependable performers during the ongoing tournament.

The semi-final against England also carries personal significance for Martinez. He left Argentina for England as a child, where he developed into a professional footballer. Now, he is set to face the country that shaped his club career on one of football's biggest stages, with a place in the World Cup final at stake.
