Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan dedicated his country's historic FIFA World Cup victory to the Palestinian people after his side reached the Round of 16 for the first time by defeating Australia.
The landmark triumph marked Egypt's first-ever win in a World Cup knockout match, securing a place in the last 16 and creating one of the nation's greatest football achievements.
After the final whistle, Hassan walked around the stadium carrying both the Egyptian and Palestinian flags. Speaking to reporters, he offered a heartfelt message of solidarity.
"May God grant them victory and have mercy on their martyrs," Hassan said. "I want to say to all the Palestinian people that I dedicate this victory to the people of Egypt and Palestine. I also dedicate it to all honourable and compassionate people."
Egypt's victory sparked celebrations across parts of the Arab world, with many Palestinians also marking the occasion.
Gazan resident Tamer Nahed wrote on X that the match had brought a rare moment of joy amid the hardship.
"For the first time, I've been following the World Cup with so much passion," he wrote. "I'm delighted that Egypt won, but the most beautiful scene was in Gaza. Thousands of people came out from their damaged homes and tents to watch the match together. There were smiles everywhere, and for a brief moment it felt as though they had forgotten everything happening around them and simply enjoyed life."
Videos widely shared on social media appeared to show groups of people in Gaza watching the match on large outdoor screens set up beside damaged buildings and temporary shelters. Some supporters waved Egyptian flags, while children had the Egyptian flag painted on their faces. Celebrations erupted after Egypt sealed victory in the penalty shootout.
Egypt will now face defending world champions Argentina in the Round of 16, with Mohamed Salah's side aiming to continue their remarkable World Cup campaign.
