Making their first World Cup appearance since 2014, the European side entered the tournament dreaming of a maiden progression beyond the group stage. The victory lifted Bosnia to four points and third place in the group standings, putting them in a strong position to qualify as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams under the expanded World Cup format.
The new competition structure allows the eight best third-placed teams to advance to the Round of 32, and Bosnia's win significantly improved their chances of securing a place in the knockout rounds.
Bosnia dominated the opening stages and nearly took the lead within 90 seconds when Ermedin Demirovic's long-range effort was brilliantly saved by Qatar goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham Abunada. The Bosnians continued to threaten, with Nikola Sunjic and Muhamed Besic both going close in the first 20 minutes.
Their breakthrough finally arrived in the 29th minute through 18-year-old starlet Alabegovic. The youngster unleashed a stunning right-footed strike from outside the penalty area that flew into the net, producing one of the standout goals of the tournament so far.
Just five minutes later, Bosnia doubled their advantage. Veteran captain Edin Dzeko delivered a dangerous cross into the box, and Qatar defender Al Brake inadvertently turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear.
The match remained entertaining as both sides pushed forward. Dzeko, making his 150th appearance for the national team, came close to adding a third in the 39th minute, but his powerful effort struck the crossbar.
Qatar responded before halftime and reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute. Almoez Ali Haidos finished from close range after a well-worked move involving Edmilson Junior, giving the hosts renewed hope.
Bosnia took a 2-1 lead into the break and continued to control possession in the second half. Qatar searched for an equaliser but struggled to break down the disciplined Bosnian defence.
The decisive goal came in the 81st minute after substitute Mahmic capitalised on a loose ball inside the penalty area and fired home with his right foot to make it 3-1.
Qatar pushed forward in the closing stages but failed to create another breakthrough, confirming their exit from the tournament without a victory.
For Bosnia and Herzegovina, however, the win could prove historic. With four points and a positive goal difference, they have placed one foot in the knockout stage and now await confirmation of whether their impressive group-stage campaign will be enough to earn a place in the Round of 32.
