The victory in Guadalupe, Mexico, saw Bafana Bafana finish second in Group A behind hosts Mexico and advance to the Round of 32, while South Korea were eliminated from the tournament.

The decisive moment came in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko converted a cross from Shapeng Moremi to score the only goal of the match. South Africa held firm for the remainder of the contest to claim a famous victory and a place in the knockout stage.

South Africa will now face Canada, runners-up in Group B, in the Round of 32 on Sunday in Inglewood, California.

Having previously appeared at the World Cups of 1998, 2002 and 2010, South Africa had never managed to progress beyond the group stage. Their campaign this year also began in disappointing fashion with a 2-0 defeat to Mexico.

However, they kept their hopes alive by earning a dramatic 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic, scoring a late equaliser. Entering the final group match, South Africa trailed both Mexico and South Korea in the standings and needed a positive result to stay alive.

They delivered under pressure, producing a disciplined performance to stun the Taeguk Warriors and secure a landmark achievement for South African football.

South Korea had opened their tournament with a 2-1 comeback victory over the Czech Republic before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Mexico in their second match. The East Asian side entered the final group game in a strong position but were unable to find a breakthrough against a resilient South African defence.

South Korea have a proud World Cup history, becoming the first Asian nation to reach the semi-finals when they finished fourth on home soil in 2002. They also advanced beyond the group stage in 2010, reaching the Round of 16 on both occasions.

This time, however, it is South Africa celebrating a historic milestone, with Bafana Bafana earning their first-ever place in the World Cup knockout rounds and keeping alive hopes of an even deeper run in the tournament.
