The new queen of the Australian Open is Elena Rybakina
The new queen of the Australian Open is Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh star won the Grand Slam title after four years. On the other hand, Aryna Sabalenka has lost in the finals of three of the last four Grand Slams. The Belarusian star was defeated 2-1 in the final.
Luck and misfortune seem to go hand in hand. The Grand Slam final means Aryna Sabalenka, but the number of losses in that final is now equal to the number of wins.
World number one Sabalenka was walking on the path of luck by overcoming misfortune at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. She was leading 3-0 in the last set. But then the picture changed. Rybakina came back from behind and won the match in five consecutive games. She ended the match with this. This was the first Australian Open win and revenge for the final loss three years ago. So, luck smiled on the face of the Kazakh 'Ice Queen'.
Both were evenly matched in the first two sets. Rybakina won the first set 6-4, and Sabalenka returned to the match by winning the second set by the same margin.
Rybakina received the champion trophy from two-time champion Jennifer Capriati. With this victory, she achieved the feat of becoming the first Kazakh player to win the Melbourne Open. This is the second Grand Slam title of Rybakina's career, which she had to wait for four years.
Kazakhstani tennis player Elena Rybakina said, "I can't find the words to speak right now. Thank you to Sabalenka for the great competition over the past few years. And I would like to thank the people of Kazakhstan for supporting me."
Rybakina rose to number three in the rankings with this victory. And Belarusian Sabalenka, who has been at the top of the world rankings for 75 weeks, has lost three of her last four finals.
Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka said, "I don't want to forget anything. First of all, congratulations to Rybakina for a great tournament. Best wishes to you and your team on this extraordinary achievement."
This makes Sabalenka's wait for her fifth career Grand Slam title even longer. She last won the US Open last year.
