The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for individual taxpayers by one month. Instead of the earlier scheduled December 31, returns can now be submitted until January 31. The NBR issued a special order in this regard on Sunday (December 28). The order said that this time has been extended considering the convenience of taxpayers.

According to NBR data, more than 4.2 million taxpayers have registered to file returns online so far in the current 2025-26 tax year. Out of this, more than 2.6 million taxpayers have already submitted their returns. That is, about 1.5 to 1.6 million taxpayers have not yet submitted their returns.

According to the NBR, new taxpayers are registering online every day. Currently, an average of more than 15,000 taxpayers are registering to file returns daily.

From this year, the process of submitting income tax returns online has been made easier. No documents or papers have to be uploaded while filing the return; only the necessary information has to be provided. The NBR hopes that this will further increase the interest in filing returns online.

Filing returns online has been made mandatory for the current tax year. However, this provision has been relaxed in the case of persons aged 65 years or above, physically disabled or with special needs, Bangladeshis residing abroad, and deceased taxpayers who can file returns through legal representatives, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. They can also file e-returns if they wish. The taxpayer's authorized representative can also file e-returns online this year.

Although there is no obligation to file returns online in the case of Bangladeshis residing abroad, they have the opportunity to file e-returns while sitting abroad by providing their passport number, national identity card number, e-mail address, etc.

Currently, returns are being filed online without uploading any documents or papers; Taxpayers can immediately receive an automatic e-return filing acknowledgement after paying their income tax through any banking service or mobile financial service.

The National Board of Revenue has launched a call center to assist taxpayers with any problems related to e-return. Taxpayers can get immediate telephonic solutions to their e-return related queries by calling the center's number 09643717171. In addition, assistance is also available from e-return help-desks established in all tax regions across the country.
