Cristiano Ronaldo spent nine seasons at Real Madrid. During this time, he set numerous records for the Spanish club. But after the Portuguese forward left, the question arose, can anyone become such a superstar at the Santiago Bernabeu?
Real Madrid have finally found the answer. Kylian Mbappe has been scoring goals since joining the team last season. The 26-year-old French forward is in such form that several of his childhood idol Ronaldo's records are now under direct threat.
Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals scored for Real in a calendar year. He scored 59 goals in 2013, which was the best year of his club career. Mbappe can break that record after 12 years, and with 55 goals, he is breathing down the neck of CR7.
Mbappe has four matches to catch up with Ronaldo. Real Madrid will face Celta Vigo in a La Liga match at the Bernabeu on Sunday (December 7). Then Real's opponents are Manchester City in the Champions League on December 10. Then the league opponents are Alaves and Sevilla.
Mbappe won the European Golden Shoe and La Liga's top scorer award with 31 goals last season. He is currently in great form. He has scored 16 goals in 15 matches this season. And 9 goals in five Champions League matches. Mbappe joined from PSG in 2024 and has scored 69 goals in 79 matches.
Ronaldo also holds the record for the most goals in a season in La Liga, with 48 goals. Mbappe has scored 16 goals in 15 matches so far this season in the league. Mbappe will have to score 33 goals in the remaining 23 matches to break the record, which is not impossible considering his form.
Ronaldo's highest goal tally in a single season in the Champions League is 17 (2013–14). Mbappe has scored 9 goals in just 5 matches this season. He needs 8 more goals to match Ronaldo's record, and 9 more to surpass it. Mbappe's chances are even bigger as he can play more matches in the new format.
