Bananas are one of the most easily available fruits not only in Bangladesh but all over the world. We all know about the nutritional value of this fruit. Whether it is with breakfast in the morning or to get quick energy before exercise, bananas are our daily companions. This fruit is an excellent source of energy, vitamins and minerals. But did you know that the nutritional value of bananas changes depending on its color and ripeness?

Recently, Dr. Saurabh Shetty, a well-known gastroenterologist in the US, posted a video on Instagram. There, he discussed the four stages of bananas and the different nutritional values in each stage. A large number of Instagram users are watching Saurabh Shetty's video.

Which banana is most beneficial for your body?

Raw or green bananas

Green bananas contain resistant starch, which is a type of prebiotic. It provides food to the good bacteria in our intestines. Dr. According to Sethi, ‘Every 100 grams of green banana contains about 3.5 grams of fiber and only 10 grams of sugar. Green bananas help in digestion and control blood sugar levels, as well as helping in weight loss.

Light green or semi-ripe bananas

At this stage, the starch in the banana slowly starts converting into sugar. Dr. Sethi said, ‘Every 100 grams of semi-ripe bananas contain about 2.5 grams of fiber. At the same time, the amount of potassium also increases. Semi-ripe bananas maintain stomach health and help in controlling blood pressure. They are also comfortable to eat due to their mild sweet taste.

Fully ripe bananas or yellow bananas

This is the most commonly seen in the market. At this time, the resistant starch in the banana decreases. But it increases the amount of vitamin C, vitamin B5 and antioxidants. In Dr. Sethi’s words, ‘It is easy to digest and is great as a pre-workout snack. Ripe bananas give quick energy. Therefore, it is suitable to eat before exercise.

Spotted or brown bananas

These are the sweetest bananas — about 17 grams of sugar per 100 grams. Although the fiber is slightly reduced, the antioxidant content reaches the highest level. Dr. Shetty says that this banana strengthens the immune system in the human body. It is ideal for making smoothies or desserts.

Final advice

Dr. Shetty says, “If your goal is gut health and blood sugar control, then semi-ripe or slightly green bananas are the healthiest for you. So from now on, choose bananas according to your needs.”

He says, “Green bananas are good for gut health, yellow bananas are good for energy, and spotted bananas are good for taste and antioxidants.”
