The Canadian government is considering buying fighter jets from various manufacturers to boost its defense capabilities amid a review of the US-made F-35 fighter jet purchase agreement. Canadian Defense Minister David McGinty made the announcement on Sunday (16).
He told CTV News that the government is grateful for any potential proposals and is also interested in joint ventures that will create jobs in Canada. Recently, the CEO of Swedish defense company Saab confirmed that talks with Ottawa on producing the Gripen fighter jet in Canada have progressed.
McGinty said that such a deal would be consistent with Canada's goal of strengthening its local defense industry. The contract to buy 88 US-made F-35 fighter jets by 2023 is currently under review. Of these, 16 aircraft are already in production. McGinty said the deal is being reviewed due to rising purchase prices and changing geopolitical situations.
He said that the review is deeply evaluating the industrial benefits of the F-35 project and other features. At the same time, the government wants to take sufficient time to make responsible decisions. Meanwhile, the Defense Minister said that no new timetable has been announced for the purchase of the fighter jets.
