Vision loss refers to partial or complete loss of vision. It can happen suddenly or gradually, in one or both eyes. In many cases, vision loss is temporary or treatable. About 12 million people in the United States aged 40 and older have some type of vision problem, of which more than 1 million are completely blind. A variety of factors, including age, disease, injury, or migraines, can be responsible for vision loss. Doctors have discussed several important issues, including the causes of vision loss.

Types of vision loss: Vision loss can be of different types, such as:

Central vision loss: Trouble seeing in the center of the eye

Peripheral vision loss: Trouble seeing in the sides or corners

Complete blindness

Night blindness: Difficulty seeing in low light

Blurred or foggy vision: Sometimes people can only see shadows or vague shapes.

Causes of sudden vision loss

Migraine

Around 25-30 percent of migraine sufferers experience visual auras. Some experience symptoms such as zigzag lines, flashing lights, tunnel vision, or loss of vision in one side. It usually lasts for 10-30 minutes.

Keratitis

Inflammation of the cornea, which is often more common in contact lens users. It can cause eye pain, blurred vision, or decreased vision. It can be cured with proper treatment.

Along with eye redness, pain, and blurriness, vision may be temporarily reduced. It usually resolves on its own, but antibiotics may be needed for bacterial infections.

Eye fatigue

Looking at a screen for a long time can strain your eyes and cause vision problems. The 20-20-20 rule (looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes) is helpful.

Corneal injury

If you get an eye injury, there is a risk of temporary or permanent vision loss. Immediate consultation with an ophthalmologist is essential.

Causes of gradual vision loss

Age-related macular degeneration

The main cause of central vision loss in people over 50 years of age. Blurred vision gradually increases in the center of vision.
Glaucoma
When the optic nerve is damaged, peripheral vision begins to deteriorate. There may be no symptoms at first, so regular check-ups are essential. Medication, laser, or surgery may be required.
Diabetic retinopathy: In diabetic patients, the blood vessels in the retina may be damaged, leading to vision loss or blindness.
Regular eye exams can detect it at an early stage.
When to see a doctor: If your vision decreases, you should consult a doctor without delay. If you experience the following symptoms, seek emergency medical attention:

Severe headache
Difficulty speaking
Face drooping
Weakness on one side of the body
Severe pain in the eye

Prevention: It is not always possible to prevent complete vision loss, but following some habits can help maintain good eye health and reduce the risk.

Give your eyes a rest: Every 20 minutes, look away from the screen and look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Use protective glasses: Use safety glasses or goggles when doing certain tasks—such as sports, construction, or home repairs.
Wear sunglasses: Avoid direct sunlight and wear sunglasses that will protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays.
Follow a healthy lifestyle: Many causes of low vision are caused by diabetes and high blood pressure.
Therefore, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet and living a good lifestyle help reduce these risks.
Get regular eye exams: Get your eyes checked by an eye specialist regularly, and know your risk of eye diseases.
Eat a nutritious diet and stop smoking: Eating well and avoiding smoking can help protect your eyes from various damages.
Vision is a very important part of our lives, and even small changes should not be neglected. Although it is not possible to prevent all types of vision loss, regular eye care, a healthy lifestyle, proper habits and timely treatment play a big role in preserving vision.
