Colombian pop star Shakira has paid a special tribute to Lionel Messi ahead of the World Cup final against Spain. Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the final with a dramatic 2-1 win over England in the semi-finals.

The Albiceleste came back strongly after falling behind in the first half; Enzo Fernandez equalised before Lautaro Martinez scored in extra time to seal the victory.

Meanwhile, the 39-year-old Messi is tied with France captain Kylian Mbappe for the tournament's Golden Boot.

The popular Colombian singer—who is best known to football fans for her famous FIFA World Cup theme songs—posted a picture of Messi on her Instagram handle, praising his extraordinary performance, dedication, and perseverance even at the age of 39.

Shakira wrote, “What Leo Messi is doing is truly incredible and extraordinary! This is a unique example of a person’s hard work, commitment, and discipline, which over time teaches them to overcome all adversities. He has proven that no one can be judged by their age or the opinions of others.”

Shakira also did not forget to credit his wife Antonella Roccuzzo as the mastermind behind Messi’s indomitable journey.

Referring to Antonella as Messi's biggest source of strength, he added, "I'm sure that having a woman like Antonella Roccuzzo by his side gives Messi the strength and inspiration to prove himself every time!"

Shakira's emotional message did not go unnoticed by Roccuzzo. He thanked Shakira on social media and re-shared her Instagram story on his own profile. Messi and Antonella, who got married in 2017 after a childhood love affair, have three sons.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi himself has given a fitting reply to those who have been criticizing the current world champions recently, alleging that the tournament referees are biased and that they receive extra benefits from football's policy makers.

After the victory against England, Messi said, "We have been playing as the best team in the world for the last four years, whether you like it or not or whatever people say.
