Singapore police have said that the death of popular singer and lyricist Zubin Garg was not a murder but an accident. Their report states that Garg refused to wear a life jacket, which has been identified as the main cause of his death.
On September 19 last year, Zubin Garg, 52, was attending a yacht party. He was involved in the accident just a day before he was to perform at the North East India Festival.
The report released in the coroner's court on Wednesday (January 14) said that Zubin initially put on a life jacket but later took it off. When he was given a life jacket a second time, he refused to put it on and started swimming alone towards Lazarus Island.
Witnesses said that he was floating limply and face down in the water as he swam towards the yacht. He was quickly rescued and given CPR, but he died later that day.
The report also said that Garg had blood pressure problems and was also suffering from epilepsy. However, it is not clear whether he was taking regular medication on the day of the accident.
The chief investigating officer said that when he first started swimming, Zubin took off his life jacket. Later, when he returned to the yacht and expressed fatigue, he refused to put it on even though he was given a life jacket a second time.
The autopsy report listed the cause of death as ‘drowning’. Some injuries were found during the rescue, but they were said to have been received during CPR or rescue operations. Blood pressure and epilepsy medication were detected in the blood, but no other drugs were detected.
The chief investigating officer in the case said that about 20 people were present on the yacht, who consumed food, drinks and alcohol. Witnesses said that Zubin also consumed alcohol. One witness mentioned that he had consumed a few cups of liqueur, gin, whiskey and a few sips of Guinness Stout.
The toxicology report showed that Zubin had a blood alcohol level of 333 milligrams per 100 milliliters, indicating severe intoxication and significantly reduced coordination and responsiveness. The forensic pathologist said there were no signs of assault, such as chewing or bruising. Therefore, it can be said that this is a purely accidental death.
