Asylum seekers will now have to wait up to 20 years to apply for permanent residence in the UK. It is reported that the country's Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce this plan on Monday (November 17). This was reported by the BBC on Sunday (November 16).
The report said that this major tough decision is being taken to reduce the number of asylum seekers and people crossing the sea in dinghies in Britain. According to the new plan, asylum seekers will only have to live in the UK temporarily. Their status as refugees will be regularly reviewed. Those who are considered safe in their home country or country of origin will then be returned.
Currently, refugee status in Britain is granted for five years. After that, they can apply for permanent residence. Now the British government is planning to increase the period for obtaining permanent residence from five years to 20 years. Britain's Home Secretary told the Sunday Times that the reforms are being made to send the message: "Don't come to this country illegally, don't come by boat."
