UN declares November 27 as the International Day for the Elimination of Child Marriage

The United Nations has declared November 27 as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage, Indian media outlet NDTV reported on Saturday (September 5).

Bhuvan Rivu, founder of 'Just Rights for Children', proposed an International Day against Child Marriage at the United Nations. Based on his proposal, Sierra Leone submitted a resolution to the United Nations on September 4. It was later approved.

The report said that India has a special connection with the day, November 27. On this day in 2024, the Indian government launched the 'Child Marriage Free India' campaign.

Welcoming the UN decision, Bhuvan Rivu said it was a very proud moment for all Indians. He claimed that India was now leading the world in child protection.

He said that more than 250 million people joined the pledge to end child marriage on November 27, 2024. This movement, which started with the initiative of children and various communities, later received government support and has now been recognized as an international day.
Rivu also said that this is a critical turning point in ending child marriage. Governments must now provide effective leadership to end child marriage worldwide by 2030. At the same time, he called for ensuring the education, safety and development of every child.

The goal of ending child marriage globally by 2030 is consistent with the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 on gender equality, which calls for ending all harmful practices for children, including early, early and forced marriage.
