Public infighting within the US administration

The Donald Trump administration is under pressure over the massive losses and failures in the war with Iran, as is often reported in the media. But who will take responsibility for this failure - Trump or his Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth? 

Alongside these two names, another name has remained unspoken; and he ultimately had to take responsibility for the failure. He is the US Secretary of the Army, or Secretary of the Army Affairs, Daniel P. Driscoll. He resigned on Monday local time.

The New York Times reported that Driscoll resigned due to a conflict with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who had moved from television presenting to politics. 

US administration officials said Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll, the military's top civilian official, submitted his resignation to President Trump on Monday after repeatedly clashing with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the removal of key military leaders with combat experience. 

Driscoll's resignation was not entirely unexpected. It came at a turbulent time when the military is going through its busiest and most critical period since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

Members of the Army's Air Defense Unit are playing a key role in deterring Iran's increasingly sophisticated missile attacks on U.S. troops deployed in the Middle East. In addition, Army commands deployed in Europe are providing Ukraine with critical intelligence and other support, helping it survive in the fight against a larger Russian force. 

Hegseth has been embroiled in a series of firings and controversies, leaving the US military virtually leaderless as it grapples with the threat of deadly drones and missiles that continue to strike US bases in the Middle East. 

A Trump administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Driscoll met with Trump in person to submit his resignation and discuss the current situation in the military. 

Administration officials said the military has been without a chief of staff since Gen. Randy George was fired without cause in April, and there is no sign of a replacement for the position. 

Hegseth has removed at least three senior officers who were considered potential successors to General George.

Now the military is also going to be deprived of civilian leadership - at least until Trump appoints a new Secretary of the Army. The Wall Street Journal first reported Driscoll's resignation. 

The resignation comes as the US midterm elections approach, making it difficult to quickly appoint and approve a new candidate. 

Dan Driscoll has resigned as US Army Secretary after nearly 18 months in the job. At 41, Driscoll is the youngest person in the country's history to hold the position. He was known as President Donald Trump's "Drone Guy" for his interest in modern warfare and the use of drones. 

CBS reported that he had been in a dispute with Defense Secretary Hegseth for several months. However, the exact cause of the dispute is not yet clear. Driscoll is second in rank to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.  

Driscoll joins a string of recent high-ranking US military officials who have resigned. Navy Secretary John Phelan abruptly resigned in April, while Army Chief of Staff Randy George, General David Hodney and Major General William Greene also resigned. 

Demands for the resignation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who is under pressure due to his failure in the Iran war, are also growing. Senators from the opposition Democratic Party are demanding his resignation. Senator John Aschoff is the most vocal on this issue.
