A charter plane crashed in Alaska, killing eight people. The crash occurred near a radar installation in the remote western part of the country on Thursday (August 20) local time, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and military officials said.

According to initial information from the FAA, the Cessna 441 model plane took off from Anchorage and was heading for Cape Newnham, located about 450 miles southwest. The plane crashed near its destination at about 12:15 p.m. local time.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Clint Johnson, head of the Alaska region of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), said that there were two pilots and six passengers on board. The plane was operated by the charter company Security Aviation.

The Alaskan command said that it was a flight operated by a civilian contractor, with a total of eight people on board. Rescue teams later arrived at the scene and confirmed that there were no survivors.

According to the command statement, the plane crashed at Cape Newnham Airport. The airport is used as an air force runway and has access to a long-range radar site.
