A US court has ordered US President Donald Trump to pay $5 million in damages to author and columnist E. Jean Carroll. The order was made by New York federal judge Louis Kaplan on Wednesday (July 8) after a jury found Trump guilty of sexual assault and defamation.
Earlier last week, the US Supreme Court refused to accept Trump’s appeal. As a result, the original ruling given in May 2023 is considered final. The ruling ordered compensation of $2 million for sexual assault and $3 million for defamatory statements.
According to NDTV, Carroll, 82, once worked as a journalist and columnist. She alleged that Trump sexually assaulted her in the changing room of a luxury department store in New York in 1996.
When she revealed the matter in a book published in 2019, Trump called Carroll "crazy" and claimed that her accusations were false. Carroll filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump after such comments. After a long legal process, in May 2023, a jury of the court found Trump guilty in Carroll's sexual assault and defamation case and awarded him $5 million in damages.
However, after the Supreme Court refused to hear the appeal, the way was clear for the ruling to be implemented. On Wednesday, federal judge Lewis Kaplan ordered that Trump must pay the $5 million deposited in the court. The court also ordered that he pay the prescribed interest.
Meanwhile, in 2022, Carroll was ordered to pay $83.3 million (83.3 million) in another defamation lawsuit filed against Trump in New York. The appeals court upheld that ruling, but its implementation process is currently suspended.
Earlier in late May, US media reported that a criminal investigation had also been launched against Carroll. US media reported that Justice Department prosecutors had launched the investigation to investigate whether she lied under oath during various depositions in the case against Trump.
