The celebration of the New York Knicks becoming NBA champions after 53 years turned into chaos. The sound of gunfire spread panic in the famous Times Square area of New York City, USA, and hundreds of people started running for safe shelter.
A video circulating on social media shows at least seven consecutive gunshots being heard in the area adjacent to 42nd Street and Broadway in Times Square. A 17-year-old teenager was shot in the incident. He was taken to the hospital in a police car as an ambulance could not reach the scene due to the crowd.
Police said that in addition to the shooting, four people were stabbed. Another video shows a man being arrested and a loaded firearm being recovered from him.
At one point during the celebration, some rioters attacked a police car, smashed windows and set fire to five school buses and five police cars. Some buses used to transport World Cup football fans were also damaged.
New York Police said a total of 63 people were arrested in connection with the violence and chaos. At least 10 police officers were injured.
Although the celebrations began across New York to celebrate the NBA title for the first time since 1973, it ultimately became a major challenge for the security forces. Tight security will be tightened around the victory procession next Thursday.
