Kim Jong Un said his country is willing to expand its nuclear weapons and their range of action. He called on the US to respect his country’s nuclear power, in a rare message.

Kim also said the US and North Korea could ‘get along well’. But this is only possible if the US accepts North Korea’s nuclear weapons and acknowledges their existence.

Kim made the remarks at a fifth party congress in Pyongyang, raising hopes of talks with the US ahead of Trump’s visit to China in April.

However, rather than expressing optimism about any diplomatic relations with South Korea, Kim referred to them as the “greatest enemy”.

“If the US respects our current nuclear status in accordance with the constitution and withdraws its hostile policy, there will be no obstacle to getting along well with the US,” Kim said. Our future relationship depends solely on the attitude of the United States.

Kim said of South Korea, "As long as South Korea cannot get out of the geopolitical conditions of the border with us, the only safe way for them is to abandon everything related to us and stay away from us."

An analyst told AFP that Pyongyang's recent comments indicate that North Korea wants to move forward alone in establishing relations with the United States, excluding South Korea.
