US President Donald Trump has once again stood by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and called for him to be pardoned in a corruption case. Trump said this at an event at the White House. The British news agency Reuters reported this news.
Trump said at the event that Netanyahu has served as a 'great prime minister' in wartime. Therefore, he should be pardoned for the corruption charges against him.
At that time, he criticized Israeli President Isaac Herzog and said that the Israeli people should shame Herzog for not pardoning Netanyahu yet.
Netanyahu met with Trump in Washington on Wednesday, where a possible deal on Iran's nuclear program and ballistic missiles was discussed. This was the seventh meeting between the two leaders since Trump took office.
Reuters reports that when asked after Trump's comments, Isaac Herzog's office said that Netanyahu's apology is being reviewed by the Israeli Justice Ministry. The president will make a decision on the matter at the end of the process.
Herzog's office also said that Israel is a sovereign state, which is governed by the rule of law. Although the idea was formed after President Trump's comments, Herzog has not yet made any decision.
It is worth noting that Benjamin Netanyahu is the first serving prime minister in Israel's history to be accused of corruption. He was indicted in 2019 on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. However, he denied all the charges.
