Jacob Bethell has broken the 136-year-old record as England's youngest captain. Bethell officially became the youngest captain in England's history when he took the toss in the three-match T20 series against Ireland that began today.

Bethell made his debut as England's captain at the age of just 21 years and 329 days. With this, the young cricketer broke the 136-year-old record.

The previous record was held by Monty Bowden. He led England in a Test against South Africa in 1889. At that time, Bowden was 23 years and 144 days old. That was the last match of his career in white for the national team.

Bethell made his debut for England in the 3rd edition last year. So far, he has played 4 Tests in the country's jersey. He has also played three ODIs and three T20Is. That is, his leadership journey has begun in the fourth international T20 match. The ECB has taken this decision mainly because it sees future leadership potential in him.

Earlier, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) selector Luke Wright praised Bethell while announcing the team for the series against Ireland.

At that time, he said, 'Jacob Bethell has impressed everyone with his leadership qualities. We want to utilize his leadership qualities with the Ireland series. It is possible to further develop this quality of his.'
