British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has once again said that the UK will recognize Palestine as a state. The Prime Minister will make such an announcement after the end of US President Donald Trump's state visit to Britain, the European economic powerhouse. Starmer had previously announced that he would recognize the Palestinian state if Israel does not meet certain conditions to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza before the UN General Assembly session in New York this month. The Guardian reports.

A high-level meeting of world leaders will begin in New York on September 23. However, the Guardian report, citing the Times, said that the official announcement has been postponed so that the issue does not dominate the joint press conference between Trump and Starmer.

Starmer has a difference of opinion with the US administration on this issue, because Washington is opposed to this move. However, France, Australia and Canada have said that they also plan to recognize the Palestinian state at the UN session.

In July, under increasing pressure from within the Labour Party, Starmer announced that he would move towards recognising Palestine. However, the conditions were that Israel would agree to a ceasefire, accept a two-state solution for a sustainable peace and allow the resumption of UN aid operations. But given the position of the Israeli government, these conditions are unlikely to be met.

Israeli forces are currently carrying out a massive ground operation in Gaza, displacing thousands of people. 147 of the 193 UN member states have already recognised the Palestinian state.

Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has for the first time directly called the situation in Gaza a 'genocide'. He said at a public rally on Wednesday, "We are seeing children starving to death in Gaza. 20,000 children have already died of starvation due to the policies of the Israeli government. The health system has collapsed, famine has been deliberately created." The latest report by the UN Commission and the interim ruling by the International Court of Justice can only conclude that genocide is taking place in Gaza.

On Tuesday, the UN Commission of Inquiry also said that in their opinion, there is reasonable evidence that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians. However, the Israeli Foreign Ministry completely rejected the accusation, saying that it is a 'distorted and false' report.

The United Kingdom is the second largest economy in Europe (after Germany) and one of the top seven economies in the world. As of 2024, the UK's GDP is approximately 3.6 trillion US dollars.
