After losing the top spot in the FIFA rankings to France, Argentina has now fallen one more step. Spain has surpassed Argentina to move up to number two in the rankings after beating Belgium to secure a semi-final spot. Argentina has dropped one step to number three.
According to the current live FIFA rankings, France has collected 1948.97 points. Spain, who is in second place, has 1934.79 points. Argentina, who has dropped to third, has 1925.15 points. All three teams are in the top three with 1900+ points. England is then in fourth place with 1871.39 points. Brazil, who made a disappointing exit from the World Cup, has improved in its rankings. They have moved up from number six to number five. Their points are 1804.92.
This ranking is being updated based on the results of each match during the World Cup. This could change again in the remaining matches of the tournament, as the top three teams are still in the running for the title.
Is the drop in the rankings a good sign for Argentina?
Losing the top spot is certainly disappointing in terms of statistics. But there is also a curious superstition in football. No team in the history of the World Cup has ever won the title after starting the tournament as the number one team in the FIFA rankings.
Argentina returned to the top of the rankings after the last FIFA international break before the World Cup. At that time, France lost 2-1 to Ivory Coast in a friendly match and Spain drew 1-1 with Iraq. Both teams lost important rating points due to these results.
Argentina, on the other hand, strengthened their position by defeating Honduras and Iceland in warm-up matches and entered the tournament as the number one team before the start of the World Cup. Now the situation has changed. France has once again taken the top spot in the rankings. Spain is second and Argentina has dropped to third.
