One of the biggest and most prestigious duels in world football is Argentina vs. Brazil. Although these two arch-rivals have faced each other multiple times in the long history of international football, they have only met four times in the biggest stage of football in the world, the FIFA World Cup. In these four appearances on the world stage, the Seleção is slightly ahead of Argentina in terms of winning statistics.
According to The Soccer World Cups, the two superpowers first met on the World Cup stage in the 1974 World Cup. Brazil defeated Argentina 2-1 in the second group stage of the tournament held in West Germany. The very next tournament, in 1978, the two teams met for the second time on Argentina's home field. However, that match ended in a goalless draw.
Later, in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, these two superpowers faced each other again, and the Brazilians left the field after defeating Argentina by a large margin of 3-1.
However, Brazil's monopoly on the World Cup ended in the 1990 World Cup in Italy. In that historic and exciting match of the knockout stage, the last sixteen, Claudio Canizia scored the only spectacular goal and Argentina tasted victory on the World Cup stage for the first time by defeating Brazil 1-0. Canizia scored the goal from a pass from the legendary Diego Maradona in that match. Since 1990, these two teams have not met on the main stage of the World Cup.
According to the overall statistics, out of the 4 matches played in the World Cup, Brazil has won 2, Argentina has won 1 match and the remaining 1 match has been drawn. As a result, Brazil is one win ahead of its arch-rivals in terms of victories on the World Cup stage.
However, apart from the World Cup, the total number of official matches, including the Copa America and other international tournaments, the win-loss statistics of the two teams are very close and it always fluctuates by a hair's breadth.
