Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker expressed his appreciation to football fans in Bangladesh after Brazil's dramatic victory over Japan, saying he had watched videos of the country's passionate World Cup celebrations on social media.
Before a Bangladeshi journalist could even ask a question during a post-match interview in Houston, Alisson smiled and said, "Nice, Bangladesh! I've seen some of your videos. Thank you, Bangladesh, for supporting us."
He later explained that he had watched footage of the country's World Cup excitement online.
When Gabriel Martinelli scored Brazil's late winner against Japan, it was already past midnight in Bangladesh. Despite the late hour, thousands of supporters celebrated across the country, scenes that have become common during Brazil's World Cup matches.
Fans in Dhaka and other cities have gathered around giant screens to watch Brazil and Argentina matches, with victories often sparking colourful late-night celebrations.
Speaking to a Bangladeshi broadcaster, Alisson said the videos of Brazilian supporters in Bangladesh cheering for stars such as Neymar and himself had left a strong impression.
"Yes, I saw the videos. I want to thank all the people of Bangladesh for supporting us. We Brazilians love you. Thank you. God bless you," he said.
Earlier, Brazil midfielder Casemiro had also thanked Bangladeshi fans while answering a question after being named Player of the Match.
Likewise, following Argentina's victory over Jordan, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez turned around after hearing "Bangladesh" and shared his appreciation for the country's supporters.
Brazil had fallen behind early in their Round of 32 clash against Japan, raising concerns among their fans. Casemiro restored parity after the break before Martinelli struck a dramatic late winner to send the five-time world champions into the Round of 16.
