Morocco booked their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey, Mexico.
The decisive moment came when Ismael Saibari calmly converted the winning penalty into the bottom-right corner, sparking wild celebrations as the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists knocked out the Dutch.
The shootout was filled with drama. Although the Netherlands converted their opening penalty, Morocco missed their first attempt. The Dutch, however, failed to capitalize as both teams exchanged misses. Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi also failed from the spot, handing the Netherlands another chance, but goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced a crucial save to deny Crysencio Summerville before Saibari sealed the victory.
Both sides created attacking opportunities from the outset, but neither could find a breakthrough before halftime. Morocco generated the clearer chances, only to be repeatedly denied by Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
The opening half was also a physical contest, with Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke suffering a bloody head injury after a heavy collision.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 72nd minute when Summerville's pass found Cody Gakpo, who fired the Netherlands into a 1-0 lead.
Gakpo's celebration was an emotional one. The Dutch forward had learned before the match that his unborn child had passed away. Fighting back tears, he looked toward the sky as he dedicated the goal.
Just as the Netherlands appeared destined for victory, Morocco struck in stoppage time. In the first minute of added time (90+1), Chemsdine Talbi delivered a pinpoint cross that was met by a powerful header from defender Issa Diop to level the score at 1-1.
Morocco dominated much of extra time, but Verbruggen kept the Dutch in the contest with a series of outstanding saves, including a remarkable knee stop to deny Soufiane Rahimi after the forward dribbled past two defenders.
Ultimately, however, Bounou emerged as Morocco's hero in the penalty shootout, helping his side complete a memorable victory and secure a place in the last 16.
