Brazil forward Neymar took a playful swipe at German mathematician Joachim Klement after Brazil's victory over Japan proved one of his World Cup predictions wrong.
Klement had predicted that Brazil would be eliminated in the Round of 32 by Japan. He also forecast that the Netherlands would go on to win the tournament. Within a matter of hours, however, both predictions collapsed.
Brazil secured a place in the Round of 16 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Japan in Houston on Sunday. Although Neymar had recovered from injury, he remained on the bench as he was not yet fit enough to play a full match.
After Brazil fought back to equalise and eventually secured the win, Neymar celebrated enthusiastically with his teammates before posting a message on X directed at Klement.
"Mr. Joachim Klement... please try again at the next World Cup," Neymar wrote.
Klement's prediction that the Netherlands would lift the trophy also proved inaccurate. Just hours after Brazil's victory, the Dutch were knocked out of the tournament after losing to Morocco in a penalty shootout.
The 2026 World Cup has seen a wave of predictions from a wide range of sources, including animals, mathematicians and economists. Statistical models typically estimate each team's chances by analysing historical results, attacking and defensive strength, current form and other large datasets. Some models even factor in variables such as a country's population and economic indicators.
Brazil's progression and the Netherlands' early exit, however, served as another reminder that football often defies even the most sophisticated predictive models. MMR
