Playing at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday night (Bangladesh time), Jesse Marsch's side secured qualification with Eustaquio's decisive goal in the second minute of added time. Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the next round.
Canada dominated from the opening whistle, controlling possession and creating the better chances after making four changes to the starting lineup from their final group-stage match. South Africa, meanwhile, relied primarily on counterattacks but struggled to carve out any clear-cut opportunities.
Jonathan David threatened early from a corner but failed to convert. Moments later, Derek Cornelius came close from a free-kick, only to miss the crucial connection in front of goal.
Canada continued to pile on the pressure before halftime. Moïse Bombito's header from a corner was brilliantly cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba, while goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced an outstanding save to deny Tajon Buchanan from the rebound. Shortly afterward, Richie Laryea went down inside the penalty area, but both the referee and VAR waved away Canada's appeals.
South Africa improved after the break as head coach Hugo Broos introduced changes in midfield to make his side more attack-minded. However, Canada remained the more dangerous team. Tani Oluwaseyi squandered a one-on-one opportunity, while Jonathan David was again denied by Williams.
Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies made his tournament debut in the 75th minute, injecting fresh pace into Canada's attack. Promise David narrowly missed with a long-range effort, and Williams once again came to South Africa's rescue by stopping another attempt from Jonathan David.
With extra time seemingly inevitable, Canada found the breakthrough in dramatic fashion. In the second minute of stoppage time, South Africa partially cleared the ball from their penalty area, but it fell kindly to Stephen Eustaquio outside the box. The midfielder controlled it with his chest before curling a low shot into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Canadian players and supporters.
The 92nd-minute strike proved to be the match-winner, as Canada claimed a memorable 1-0 victory and booked a historic place in the World Cup Round of 16.
