The United States and Iran are holding direct meetings to resolve disputes related to the security and navigation of the Strait of Hormuz. The two countries are scheduled to meet in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Tuesday (June 30).
This information was reported by Axios, citing US officials.
The report said that Washington and Tehran have agreed to stop attacking each other and end the ongoing US military campaign against Iran. As a result, the way is paved for talks on the Strait of Hormuz.
Axios also said that previously scheduled talks on the nuclear program have been suspended for the time being. Resolving the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz is now being given top priority.
According to the report, the reason for the tension is not only a different interpretation of Article 5 of the Memorandum of Understanding on the management of the strait. The delay in the implementation of a direct communication system between the US military and Iran's Revolutionary Guard, which was supposed to prevent unwanted clashes at sea, is also one of the reasons for the dispute.
