Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has admitted he would have preferred to avoid facing Morocco so early in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, describing the Round of 32 encounter as one of the standout fixtures of the round.
Ranked sixth and seventh respectively in the FIFA rankings, the Netherlands and Morocco both impressed during the group stage with dynamic, attacking football, setting the stage for a highly anticipated showdown.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Koeman acknowledged the quality of the opposition but expressed confidence in his own side.
"This is a big match for this stage of the competition because it brings together two teams that believe they can go a long way in the tournament," Koeman said, according to Reuters. "A match of this level has perhaps arrived a little earlier than expected."
Despite recognising Morocco as one of the tournament's most dangerous teams, the Dutch coach insisted the Netherlands would stick to their attacking philosophy.
"It will be a very attractive match," he said. "We will play attacking football. Morocco have many talented players, but so do we. We know where we need to stop them, and we are not worried."
Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk also praised the strength of the Moroccan squad, highlighting captain Achraf Hakimi as one of the world's best players.
Van Dijk also identified Brahim Díaz, Ismael Saibari and 18-year-old Ayoub Bouaddi—one of the breakout stars of this World Cup—as players the Dutch defence must keep a close eye on if they are to progress to the Round of 16.
