After overcoming adversity to reach the knockout stage, the South American side believe they have nothing to lose against one of the tournament favourites.

Paraguay began their campaign with a heavy 4-1 defeat to co-hosts the United States but recovered impressively to qualify for the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed teams for the first time since the 2002 World Cup.

Their qualification became even more memorable after holding off Türkiye with 10 men in the group stage, a result that kept their World Cup hopes alive.

Germany, meanwhile, topped Group E but head into the knockout stage with some questions to answer after suffering a defeat to Ecuador in their final group match. Their late victory over Ivory Coast also failed to convince many observers.

Speaking at Sunday's pre-match press conference, Alfaro acknowledged Germany's pedigree but insisted Paraguay would not be overawed.

"They are one of the favourites to win the World Cup, but we will give everything we have on the pitch," he said. "This is a huge and exciting challenge for us."

The Argentine took charge of Paraguay following the team's disappointing group-stage exit at the 2024 Copa América, where they lost all three matches.

Alfaro praised his players for the resilience they have shown in turning their fortunes around and believes simply reaching the knockout stage already represents a significant achievement.

Because they advanced as one of the best third-placed teams, Paraguay had to endure an anxious wait after their goalless draw with Australia before learning they had qualified and discovering their Round of 32 opponents.

"We only arrived late last night," Alfaro said. "It's not the ideal preparation for a match against Germany, but I have complete confidence in this squad and in their ability to overcome any adversity."

The 62-year-old also told his players to embrace the occasion.

"I told them this is our real World Cup. Others may see it differently, but for me the important thing is recognising everything we have achieved to get here."

Reflecting on the significance of playing on football's biggest stage, Alfaro added: "I've learned that only a select few get the opportunity to play at a World Cup. If you make the most of this experience, it can change your life."
