With the match seemingly destined for extra time, Eustáquio struck in added time to seal Canada's first-ever knockout-stage victory, ending South Africa's dream in their maiden appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds.
Fans had to wait until the dying moments for the breakthrough in an otherwise tightly contested encounter.
The decisive goal came after a South African defender headed away a cross to the edge of the penalty area, where Eustáquio was waiting. The Ontario-born midfielder, of Portuguese descent, controlled the ball on his chest before firing a low half-volley beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who was unable to keep it out despite getting a hand to the shot.
Although Canada did not dominate possession, they created the better chances throughout the match. In the first half, Derek Cornelius, Moïse Bombito and Tajon Buchanan all came close, only to be denied by Williams and South Africa's resilient defence.
Canada also appealed for a penalty just before halftime after Richie Laryea appeared to be fouled inside the area, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review.
The Canadians continued to press after the break. Tani Oluwaseyi produced an excellent solo effort, but Williams made another crucial save before defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi blocked Jonathan David's follow-up attempt.
Canada's star full-back Alphonso Davies made his first appearance of the tournament midway through the second half, adding pace and energy to the attack. However, South Africa's disciplined defence looked set to force extra time until Eustáquio's late intervention settled the contest.
Canada will now face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between the Netherlands and Morocco in the Round of 16 on July 4 in Houston, where Jesse Marsch's side will face an even sterner test in their bid to continue their remarkable World Cup run.
