Ahead of their next fixture against Uzbekistan on Tuesday night, the pressure surrounding the squad has reportedly increased, with strong reactions on social media adding to the scrutiny.

Speaking to the media, Dalot said the team remains focused and united despite external criticism. “Criticism will always be there. But our message is that millions of people want Portugal to win, and there are also some who do not want us to succeed,” he said.

He added, “I have been in football for many years and I know criticism is part of the process. We cannot escape it. There is constructive criticism as well. Our message is clear—we are united as a team, we are strong, and we are ready to do everything to win.”

The defender also defended captain Ronaldo, who has faced criticism after a quiet performance in the opening match. The Portugal national football team captain, playing in his sixth World Cup, struggled to make an impact against DR Congo.

Dalot, however, stressed that Ronaldo’s mentality remains unchanged. “Everyone knows Cristiano’s ability to handle criticism. Whatever people say, it is part of his environment. At this level, pressure is always there. Our view of him has not changed. He is always ready to represent the country and help the team,” he said.

He further revealed that the squad had already prepared for such challenges before the tournament began, particularly regarding social media pressure.

“We spoke before the World Cup about social media and criticism. When you have a player like Cristiano in the team, you have to learn to deal with unusual levels of scrutiny. That is why we have tried to distance ourselves from social media negativity,” Dalot said.

Despite the disappointing start, Dalot believes the early setback could benefit the team in the long run. “We are trying to see a positive side. The fact that this has come early in the tournament gives us time to respond and improve. The sooner the setback comes, the better it is for us to recover and move forward,” he added.

Portugal will be looking to bounce back when they face Uzbekistan in a crucial Group K encounter on Tuesday night.
