At Kansas City Stadium on Sunday, Room produced a goalkeeping masterclass, denying Ecuador time and again throughout the 90 minutes. The veteran shot-stopper made an astonishing 15 saves to keep a clean sheet and secure a historic point for the World Cup debutants.

The achievement was made even more remarkable as Room set a new record for the most saves by a goalkeeper in a World Cup match without extra time since official records began in 1966.

His heroic display enabled Curacao to make history by earning a valuable point against one of South America’s strongest teams.

Ecuador dominated possession, controlling 75 percent of the ball, but found no way past the inspired goalkeeper. The South Americans attempted 26 shots in total, with 15 on target, yet failed to score as Room thwarted every dangerous effort that came his way.

Curacao, meanwhile, managed 10 shots, four of which were on target, while enjoying just 25 percent possession. Despite spending long periods defending, they remained organised and resilient throughout the contest.

The result leaves Ecuador still searching for their first victory of the tournament after opening their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast.

Ecuador will face Germany in their final group-stage match on June 26, knowing that only a victory will keep their hopes of reaching the second round alive. Even then, qualification could depend on results elsewhere and goal difference calculations.

Curacao, meanwhile, will take on Ivory Coast on the same day, hoping to build on one of the most memorable results in the nation’s football history.
