The draw was celebrated like a victory by Curacao, while Ecuador were left deeply disappointed after failing to break down a resilient opponent. The South American side, which had defeated both Argentina and Brazil during World Cup qualifying and finished above the Selecao in the standings, have now managed just one point from their opening two matches after also losing 1-0 to Ivory Coast.

The undisputed hero of the match was Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room. The 37-year-old made 15 saves over 90 minutes, setting a new record for the most saves in a World Cup match without extra time since records began being officially tracked from the 1966 tournament.

Room came within one save of equalling the overall World Cup record of 16 saves, set by former United States goalkeeper Tim Howard against Belgium at the 2014 World Cup.

Ecuador created numerous opportunities throughout the match but repeatedly found themselves denied by Room’s outstanding reflexes and positioning. Captain Enner Valencia came close to scoring in the opening minute after finding himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Room produced an excellent stop. The Curacao shot-stopper continued to frustrate Valencia, Moises Caicedo and the rest of Ecuador’s attack for the remainder of the contest.

Curacao also created a few promising chances in the first half under veteran coach Dick Advocaat. However, poor passing in the final third and wayward finishing prevented the World Cup newcomers from finding a breakthrough.

Despite the goalless outcome, the result keeps the knockout-stage hopes of both teams alive. Curacao, however, remain at a disadvantage because of their heavy defeat to Germany in the opening match, which significantly damaged their goal difference.

Still, earning a point against one of South America’s strongest teams marks a landmark achievement for Curacao and will be remembered as one of the nation’s greatest footballing moments. For Ecuador, meanwhile, serious questions remain as they search for their first win of the tournament.
