Germany secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in one of the most thrilling matches of the World Cup, booking their place in the knockout stage thanks to a last-minute winner from substitute Deniz Undav.

The match, played at BMO Field in Toronto, saw Germany dominate large spells with their attacking trio of Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala and Lukas Nmecha creating several clear chances. However, they were repeatedly denied by a disciplined Ivory Coast defence in the opening half.

Against the run of play, Ivory Coast struck first in the 30th minute. After Nathaniel Brown made a crucial block to deny Amad Diallo, Franck Kessié reacted quickest to the loose ball and fired home from close range to give the African side a 1-0 lead.

Germany thought they had equalised twice in the first half, but both goals were ruled out—first for a foul involving Aleksandar Pavlović and later due to infringement involving Jamal Musiala.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 68th minute, with substitutes proving decisive. A cross from Nadiem Amiri bypassed Kai Havertz and fell perfectly for Deniz Undav, who produced a superb volley to bring Germany level.

As the match appeared to be heading for a draw, late drama unfolded in stoppage time. In the fourth minute of added time, Lucas Nmecha showed great composure inside the box and teed up Undav, who turned sharply and smashed home the winner to complete a remarkable comeback.

The victory secures Germany’s place in the Round of 32 from Group E. They now need just a point in their final group match to finish as group winners. Their top spot could also be confirmed earlier depending on other results.

For Ivory Coast, the defeat is a major setback. They had been in a strong position with four points and the prospect of qualification within reach, but the late loss has complicated their path to the knockout stage. They will now need a positive result in their final group match to keep their hopes alive.
