Luis de la Fuente Calls for Patience as Comparisons Between Lamin

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has dismissed ongoing comparisons between rising star Lamine Yamal and Argentina legend Lionel Messi, saying such discussions are unnecessary and unhelpful for the young winger’s development.
Spain, known as La Roja, began their World Cup campaign with a disappointing goalless draw against Cape Verde, a match where they struggled to convert chances despite dominating possession. The 2010 world champions failed to break through what was described as a resilient defensive display, leaving them frustrated in their opening Group H fixture.
Yamal, who was not fully fit to start, was introduced in the 71st minute. Despite his limited time on the pitch, he immediately made an impact, attempting five dribbles—more than any other player on the field—highlighting his influence even as a substitute.
Spain will next face Saudi Arabia on Sunday night, a crucial Group H encounter as they look to secure their first win of the tournament. Expectations remain high that Yamal could play a more decisive role in that match.
The 18-year-old has already made history with Spain, becoming both the youngest debutant and youngest goalscorer for the national team. He has scored six goals and provided 11 assists in 26 appearances for Spain, while his club career at Barcelona has also been remarkable, with 49 goals and 45 assists in 151 matches.
Unsurprisingly, comparisons with Lionel Messi continue to dominate discussions, given Yamal’s rapid rise and technical brilliance. However, De la Fuente strongly rejected such parallels.
“Comparing him to anyone is a mistake. He is 18 and still in the process of growing and maturing. We must allow him to follow his own path,” the coach said ahead of the Saudi Arabia match.
He further added, “Players with special talent are always ready. They are like geniuses such as Salvador Dalí or Michelangelo. What seems extraordinary to us is natural to them.”
Regarding Yamal’s involvement in the upcoming match, De la Fuente remained cautious, saying his playing time would depend on the game situation.
“The best news is that he is with us and in good form. Whether he plays 55, 58 or 63 minutes will depend on the match. We will assess what is best for the team and for him,” he added.
