Argentina captain Lionel Messi has claimed the top spot in FIFA’s official World Cup Power Rankings following the completion of the opening round of matches.

The reigning world champion earned the recognition after producing a brilliant performance in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria.

FIFA’s data-driven performance index evaluates players based on their contributions in three key areas: attacking play, creativity and defensive work. Messi topped the attacking category with a rating of 8.13 out of 10, placing him at the summit of the overall rankings.

New Zealand forward Elijah Just occupies second place with a rating of 7.74, while Ivory Coast winger Amad Diallo sits third on 7.47.

Messi delivered a memorable display against Algeria, scoring in the 17th, 60th and 76th minutes to complete the 11th hat-trick of his international career.

The three goals also marked the first World Cup hat-trick of the Argentine legend’s career.

With those strikes, Messi’s World Cup tally has risen to 16 goals, drawing him level with German great Miroslav Klose. As a result, Messi and Klose now share the record as the all-time leading scorers in FIFA World Cup history.

The performance further strengthened Messi’s legacy on football’s biggest stage, adding another milestone to a career already filled with individual and collective achievements.
