Asian powerhouse Japan and African representatives Tunisia are set to be part of a historic milestone as they face off in the 1000th match in FIFA World Cup history. The Group F encounter of the ongoing tournament will take place in Monterrey, Mexico, on Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 10:00 am Bangladesh time.
Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu is eager to mark the occasion with a victory. His side earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their opening match, coming from behind twice against the European heavyweights.
Tunisia, meanwhile, enter the match under new leadership after suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their tournament opener. Following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi, experienced French coach Hervé Renard has been appointed with the task of reviving the team’s campaign.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Moriyasu said his team is focused solely on securing all three points.
“The Netherlands played very well in the first match, and so did our team. But we are not completely satisfied with the result. Our focus is now on Tunisia, and I believe everyone in the squad understands how important it is to win this match,” he said.
The Japanese coach also warned against underestimating a Tunisia side rejuvenated by a managerial change.
“I am certain this Tunisia team will be different from the one that played against Sweden. A new coach always brings fresh motivation. They are well organized defensively and capable of creating scoring opportunities while exploiting weaknesses in the opposition,” Moriyasu added.
Renard, who famously guided Saudi Arabia to a stunning victory over Argentina at the last World Cup, now finds himself leading a different team on football’s biggest stage. Four years later, the Frenchman faces another difficult challenge as he attempts to steer Tunisia back into contention.
Ahead of the clash against four-time Asian champions Japan, Renard admitted that his side has little room for error.
“We are desperate to bounce back tomorrow, and I believe that determination will make the difference on the pitch,” he said.
Addressing the challenge awaiting his players, the Tunisian coach stressed the importance of collective effort.
“I want to emphasize that playing as a team is our only expectation. It may seem like I keep repeating it, but against a team of Japan’s quality, our team spirit and organization must be flawless,” Renard added.
