Germany will face Ivory Coast in a highly anticipated Group E clash at 2:00 am on Saturday night. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Nagelsmann said his team is preparing with the expectation that Ivory Coast will provide a stern test.
Addressing reporters in Toronto, the 38-year-old coach highlighted the strengths of the African champions.
“They are very solid defensively. The three players leading their attack are all extremely quick. In their previous match, one of their forwards, Nicolas Pépé, was virtually impossible to stop. He dominated the game from one end of the pitch to the other,” Nagelsmann said.
The German coach also believes Ivory Coast’s physical style of play could create difficulties for his side.
“We are preparing for how to deal with their physical approach. We may not always succeed because they are a very good team. But we will focus on playing our own game,” he added.
Despite Germany’s emphatic 7-1 victory over World Cup debutants Curaçao, winger Leroy Sané faced criticism for an underwhelming performance. Nagelsmann came to the defence of the Galatasaray player during the press conference.
“I really do not like negative coverage of my players. Journalists can write positive things about him, and I am sure Sané himself will make that happen. I do not think the criticism will affect his confidence. All he needs is one good game, and hopefully the next match will be that game,” the German coach said.
Meanwhile, Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé insisted that his team is targeting nothing less than victory.
“We are not here to watch Germany play. We are here to win. We want to secure qualification for the next round by winning this match,” he said.
The African side are also aiming to clinch top spot in the group with a victory. Faé stressed that his players are not concerned about who enters the contest as favourites.
“We are not worried about who is the favourite. We were not favourites against Ecuador either. Our objective is to win the match. We want to play to our strengths. Germany are a strong team, but we are preparing for this game the same way we prepare for every other match,” he added.
Like Germany, Ivory Coast also won their opening fixture. The African side defeated Ecuador 1-0 thanks to a goal from Amad Diallo.
Under FIFA’s new tournament regulations, head-to-head results are used as a key tiebreaker. As a result, the winner of this match will finish the group stage as the top-ranked team in Group E.
