Pop empress Taylor Swift's triumphant journey is not limited to the concert stage or the Billboard charts, but now it has reached the world of words. One of the world's most popular online dictionaries, Dictionary.com, has officially added a new word to their vocabulary— 'Swiftie'.

According to the dictionary, the word 'Swiftie' means— 'a fan or devotee of Taylor Swift's music.' Although fans have been calling themselves this name for years, it is now an accepted English word.

The name 'Swiftie' is now proudly added to the list of legendary fanbases like Beyoncé's fans 'Beyhive', Star Trek fans 'Trekkies' or Jane Austen's fans 'Janeite'.

Why this inclusion?

Dictionary.com has stated that for a word to be included in the dictionary, it must have widespread use and universal meaning. They say, “Our linguists look at whether a word is used by many people, not just one. We add it to the list when a word has a specific and acceptable meaning for everyone and is likely to last a long time.”

As a result, this recognition once again proves that Swifties are influencing everything from football stadiums to international politics.

Legal battle

It is worth noting that Taylor Swift was already quite aware of the rights to this name. On February 15, 2017, she applied to trademark the word ‘Swifty’ through her company ‘TAS Rights Management, LLC’. After a long legal process, it was fully registered in 2022.

The dictionary authorities also admitted that like Taylor Swift’s songs, this name will not fade easily. This passion of fans is now not just a nickname, but an important part of modern pop culture.
