On screen, Tom Cruise is synonymous with jumping out of planes, performing incredible stunts, and making billions of dollars at the box office. But his new movie, Digger, has turned all that upside down in an instant.

The environmental satire, directed by Oscar-winning director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, has been a box office flop. Despite a massive budget of around $150 million and another $100 million in promotion, the film has only grossed $20 million worldwide in its three days.

According to estimates by the influential entertainment news outlet Deadline, the final loss for production company Warner Bros. could reach around $150 million.

But there is now an uproar in Hollywood over why a film featuring a megastar like Tom Cruise and a bunch of mediocre actors like Riz Ahmed or Sandra Bullock failed so miserably to attract an audience.

Film analysts are pointing their finger at the sudden change in Tom Cruise's familiar action image as one of the main reasons for this commercial disaster.

Audiences are used to seeing Tom Cruise in the theater as a traditional handsome hero or a tense stuntman. However, in this movie, the actor's familiar appearance was hidden behind heavy makeup, prosthetics, and a sagging belly.

In the movie, he plays a cynical oil tycoon who confuses the world by causing an environmental disaster due to his wrong decisions in Greenland. Cruise's unusual and strange transformation was not easily accepted by fans, which is one of the main reasons why they turned away from the cinema.

Basically, when star actors go beyond their known boundaries and venture into such overly experimental films, there is a major disconnect with the general audience. This risk is not new in the entertainment world; it happened in the past with Salman Khan's 'Tubelight' or Shah Rukh Khan's 'Fan'.

Cruise may have given his all in the movie 'Digger', but the audience couldn't connect with the movie at all because it didn't have the name of a big franchise or the 'safe haven' of risky stunts.

Added to this was the production company's confusing marketing strategy and the complex presentation of the movie.

Warner Bros. initially promoted the film as a high-profile, serious work of art, but when the audience response was lukewarm, they quickly changed the format of the promotion to a more commercial one. This ambivalence created skepticism among audiences.

On the other hand, despite trying to convey a message to society under the guise of humor, the film loses its momentum due to excessive moralizing and inconsistent storyline. As a result, 'Digger' is on its way to making box office history by becoming one of the most talked about and expensive commercial failures of 2026.
