Lionel Messi scored a brace in his first match since retiring from the Argentina national team as his team Inter Miami defeated DC United 4-0 on Saturday, ending Miami's five-match winning streak.
The 39-year-old, who last played for Argentina four nights ago against Benin, scored in that match. This time, he scored in the 47th and 60th minutes for Miami, the reigning MLS champions, who have won just their second of their last 11 league games.
Miami took the lead early in the match. Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez scored in the third minute. He sent the ball into the net with a powerful left-footed shot from the center of the box. He scored again in the 39th minute. This was his 16th goal of the season. Herman Bertram provided the assists for both goals.
Then it was Messi's turn. He scored with a powerful left-footed shot from a pass from Suarez. Miami led 3-0. Thirteen minutes later, he scored another goal, beating three defenders. Miami's victory was assured right then.
With this win, Miami has reached 49 points with 13 wins and 10 draws in 28 matches. They have moved up from third to second place in the Eastern Conference.
Meanwhile, Messi is now the league's top scorer. He has scored 23 goals and assisted on 13 more.
