The ruling BJP has accused Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, of lying about President Draupadi Murmu.
The party has alleged that Rahul has spread false and misleading information about the meeting of opposition alliance 'India' leaders with President Draupadi Murmu on Friday (October 9) night, Anandabazar Patrika reported.
BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said on Saturday (October 10), "Rahul Gandhi has distorted the truth to create his own fabricated political narrative. Earlier too, he has misinterpreted the statements of important constitutional institutions like the Supreme Court and the Election Commission to suit his own convenience. Now he has also become active in making the highest institution of the country, the President, a tool for his own politics."
The opposition alliance 'India' had planned to submit a memorandum to the President seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who is accused of 'illegal and arbitrary activities'. The President gave the deadline at 8 pm on Friday. Apart from Rahul, the 'India' delegation included Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, CPM General Secretary MA Baby, CPI General Secretary D Raja, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, RJD's Tejashwi Yadav and Manoj Jha, NCP (Sharad Pawar) Supriya Sule, Dalit organization VISIK's Thol Tirumalavyan and Samajwadi Party's Rajiv Roy.
After meeting the President, Rahul and Mamata claimed that the President did not dismiss the allegations of vote rigging. Rather, he listened to them attentively. Not only that, the President also asked for evidence to support the allegations.
Rahul said, 'We have mentioned in the memorandum that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Gyanesh Kumar have conspired to destroy India's democracy.'
The Congress leader claimed that the President never denied their statement. Rahul said, 'The President has heard everything we have said. He did not give any counter arguments to our statement. We have to submit evidence of vote rigging. We will go to the Supreme Court on Monday and meet the Chief Justice. We will also submit a memorandum to him.'
BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu said, "Rahul is lying. He has crossed all limits. For the last few days, the opposition under his leadership has been making baseless allegations and holding baseless protests! Even bizarre claims are being made that the President has accepted the demands of the opposition!"
