11 climbers killed in deadly avalanche in Russia

At least 11 climbers have been killed and six others injured in a deadly avalanche in Russia's North Caucasus region, local emergency services said.

The incident occurred on Mount Mizirgi in the Kabardino-Balkaria region at around 5pm local time on Sunday (September 6). A group of 33 climbers were there at the time.

Emergency services said that as of 9 a.m. Monday, 10 climbers had managed to descend the mountain on their own. However, six others were still missing.

More than 50 rescue workers are working to rescue the missing, but the remote mountainous area and the threat of another avalanche are hampering the rescue operation.

The report also noted that Mount Mizirgi is one of the highest peaks in Russia's North Caucasus, where harsh weather and rugged terrain make rescue operations extremely risky.
