South Korea no longer blindly trusts the US, wants to stand on its own feet

Faced with North Korea's nuclear threat and the sudden change in behavior of the United States, the South Korean government has now strongly urged the country to increase its own military capabilities. 

The country's ruling Democratic Party has made it clear that the days of sitting idly by and relying on the United States for the country's security are over.

Standing in South Korea's parliament, ruling party leader Kim Min-seok said that the United States is no longer a benevolent big brother, but is instead negotiating toughly for its own interests. Therefore, Seoul must build its own defense system now to protect the country's sovereignty and people.

Seoul's concern stems from some of US President Donald Trump's recent major decisions. Trump has decided to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un soon. He has also ordered the US military to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea, citing cost. Trump claims that these military exercises waste a lot of money and provoke North Korea.

In such a situation, Seoul's main fear is that the United States may not force North Korea to destroy its nuclear weapons, but may agree to an agreement that would only temporarily halt the development of new weapons.

For this reason, the Democratic Party believes that there is no alternative to building an independent defense system so that the country's security is not jeopardized even if a sudden agreement is reached between Washington and Pyongyang. At the same time, it has also been suggested to find a way to live in peace by avoiding unnecessary conflict with North Korea.
