Former Honduran President Hernandez Returns Home After Trump’s Pardon

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has returned to his home country, Honduras, eight months after being pardoned by US President Donald Trump. He received the pardon while serving a 45-year sentence in the United States on drug and arms trafficking charges.

On Sunday (July 26), he landed at Palmerola International Airport, about 60 kilometers from the capital Tegucigalpa, on a private plane. He was welcomed at the airport by his mother, wife Ana Garcia and other family members. Later, hundreds of party supporters also welcomed him.

Upon arriving at the airport, Hernandez and his family members knelt and prayed. Then he departed on another flight to Toncontin Airport in Tegucigalpa.

Hernandez served two consecutive terms as president of Honduras from 2014 to 2022. His wife, Ana Garcia, ran for president in 2025, but lost to incumbent President Nasri Asfour.

The former president is due to appear in court on August 3 on charges of fraud and money laundering. An arrest warrant issued against him in June was suspended, meaning he was not immediately detained upon his return.

In a recent interview with Reuters, the 57-year-old Hernandez said he would appeal the dismissal of all charges against him. “It is difficult to express in words how I feel about returning to my country. I was counting the days until I could see my family,” he wrote in a message on social media.

“The time I spent in prison was very difficult. I would not wish that experience on anyone,” he added.

The legal process against Hernandez began in February 2022, when he was arrested in Tegucigalpa. He was later extradited to the United States in April of the same year. In 2024, a US court sentenced him to 45 years in prison for drug and arms trafficking. However, he has denied these charges from the beginning.

Meanwhile, in a corruption investigation known as "Pandora Two", Hernandez is accused of embezzling about $11 million in state funds for political campaigns between 2010 and 2013. The indictment says that part of the money was spent on his first presidential election campaign.

However, the charges against former President Porfirio Lobo and former Finance Minister Wilfredo Serrato, who were involved in the same investigation, have already been dismissed.

Regarding his future plans in politics, Hernandez said that he is not completely ruling out the possibility of running for re-election. However, he does not have any such plans for now. He said, "Our party has new leadership. I want to share my political experience with them."
