Government shuts down internet in Jantar Mantar and surrounding areas, people in extreme distress

The Indian government has shut down mobile internet services in Jantar Mantar and its surrounding areas in central Delhi due to ongoing student protests. The ban, which was imposed from Thursday morning (July 23), has affected the Mandi House area, about two kilometers away. Initially, the order was until 4 pm, but it was later extended until midnight.

Along with the protesters, the general public and employees have been suffering due to the lack of internet. Small traders and buyers have been in serious trouble as online transactions or UPI are not working. Many are forced to buy and sell only in cash. In addition, along with internet-based communication, ordinary phone calls are also being severely disrupted.

The government often orders internet shutdown in specific areas to prevent rumors and violence. However, this time the directive has been kept completely secret. Although it is mandatory to publicly disclose the reason for the internet shutdown as per the Supreme Court order, it was not followed. Digital rights groups have strongly criticized the government's move to shut down the internet without any prior notice.
